Towards the end of the 19th century a new musical genre, that was going to grow and conquer the world throughout the 20th century and beyond, Jazz originated styles so different that they do not seem to be one.
However, everything comes out from a single root, the United States,where European instruments met African rhythms. In the beginning, it was played with a spontaneous bantering of banjo, double bass, winds,washing board and much joy.
Today, it could be with the masterful phrases of a sax, a trumpet or a piano, although the bass or drums can at any time jump to the foreground; even some instrument that nobody dreamed of until its performer played Jazz with it.
Solos, virtuosity in improvisation and timbre, beauty and expression,all of them are of supreme value in jazz; a music style that still today is considered something “for connoisseurs” and yet it is pure passion.
Even though we live times of mature, well-traveled jazz, played in academies and theaters; there is still a bar full of smoke, with little light and a lot of atmosphere, in every city, where a band, or a soloist is playing jazz; free of analysis, full of feeling.
Considered for decades music for savages, Jazz is now respected even in the intellectual circles and was defined “an exceptional national treasure” in 1987 by the Congress of the United States.
