The term Folk could refer to the native music of any place; but since the beginning of the hippie era, we call folk to an innovation on American folklore, which continues to be created, from that time until today, in various languages and with many local nuances. The message is clearly central. It is usually embodied in phrases filled with images with simple melodies.
Since poetry is as much or more important than music, the interpreter becomes a juggler – someone who walks around the world saying things. The archetype is a solitary musician with an acoustic guitar, his voice and a harmonica. Groups with various voices and several guitars are a supreme delight. The folk guitar can make different shuffles or arpeggios, but in the most characteristic songs, the notes seem to sprinkle disorderly, enhancing the shine of the metallic strings. Later, it appeared some sophistication, electric instruments (typical of the folk-rock fusion), violin and entire orchestras.
The folk artists can dazzle us with their games of voices but the goal does not seem to be the virtuosity but the sense of each phrase. For every folk musician in a theater, there are many gathering in a house,in a forest or desert; they´re rescuing the nature of the human soul; embellishing life and expanding our self knowledge. To enjoy time with a Folk singer around a campfire is a real experience; when the last song ends, we will surely want another song.
