Music style Decades

Music is continually changing. New stylescome out, representing ages without clear limits; some last longer, some lastless, but for simplicity we usually divide this evolution in decades.

There are places for enjoying music of acertain period of time, while there are D.Js. capable of making us travel  through a fascinating trip of up  to half a centuy of musical history in a  short while.

40s.

Nowadays almost no one goes so back in a reviewof decades during a party. Big bands (made up of 12 to 25 instruments, most ofthem brasses) with swing and jazz from then fill us with sofistication andglamour. It seems that it sounds better between natural silk ties and dresses, precious stones, and perfect hairdos. At the end of this age  “crooners” surge i.e. male singers withstrong and very professional voices, with an intimate attitude.

50s.

Rock ´n roll is born, together with twistand many other very light rythms that accompany a social transformation. Lifehas changed and people express it in the dancing places: romantic moments beginafter crazy ones. Top singers are generally showmen, and their movements arerevolutionary at that moment. Eletric Guitar solos get  very important attention over other instruments.

Jazz,in this period becomes more exquisite, complex and full of virtuosism. Anotherco-existent trend is the vocal bands, sounding like heavenly harmonies.

60s.

The most strongly changing decade for music–together with arts and philosophy-, moved the creation epicentre from theU.S.A.  to Great Britain. Hippie culturegave humanity a possibility of freedom never known before. In the need of anykind of experience, from new sensations up to a new social order, mod rythms, such as rock, twist and many others, initiated the explosion first called pop and later beat. Finally it generated lots of mixed  genders joining the most varied traditions tothe latest creations. Psicodelia is the most distinctive one at the end ofthese years, while  there are also songswith a very rich, deep poetry and an enormous production  of one season hits: simple, upbeat and shortsongs, which disappear completely after a short while.

70s.

The age of a world broken in two divided theaudience as well. From the creative boom of the sixties there are still many artistswho give their best during these years, in which music played in a theatre or astadium, with some complexity in notes and eventually in words –with a message-is named cult-music. On the other side there´s a lot of dancing music: funny, repetitive, simple songs. The mayor gendre is disco.

Soft-rock is one of the most remarkablestyles during that period. While many forms or fussion consolidate:sinfonic-rock, jazz-rock, folk-rock, and so on.

80s.

The same styles keep evolving; attention ismainly caught by two artists: Michael Jackson –with his innovativebreak-dance-, and Madonna –with transgressive attitudes and messages-.

Video-clips reach the masses, spreadingimages connected to sounds. Then, choreographic dance comes to a relevantposition, guiding popular music.

At the time, hard-rock and metal growin proposals and audience. Meanwhile, hip-hop gains big importance; it wascreated in the ´70s but its massive development is  during these years.

90.

It’s a hard to define period, because ofthe coexistence of numerous gendres. Outstands alternative music –umbrella Wordincluding many others such as grunge, punk or indie-rock-

Country music has a remarkable productionthrough new composers and singers. Many european singers and bands are the brightstar in pop-music. Soft-rock is still what adults listen to. The women´sliberation movement gains strength through the lyrics.

2000-2009

A real evolution in styles isconsolidating. Hip-hop and rap become influential. Female vocalists and youthbands  quickly succeed in pop music.

Contemporary adult music is  still very alive, attracting  artists from country music, which is also atits best.
